Smooth Sailing
Well it’s been a while coming, but I finally made it to Portugal!! And so far, it’s been worth the two flights, lack of sleep, figuring out the metro and taking two trains to get to my first destination -Porto!! And if you haven’t figured it out yet, it’s going to involve a wee bit of wine drinking while I’m in the land of Port wine 🍷
The good news is I’m nice and settled into my quaint little spot right in the heart of the city and have the most helpful hosts I could ever ask for. They even gave me a welcome box with local port wine and the well known pastel de nata...more to come on this, but I can say that my first one tasted pretty damn good!
First impression of Portugal upon my arrival - they have a serious lack of directional signs to help you navigate public transit. Perhaps the Portuguese just get a kick out of watching tourists scratching their heads with confusion and being lost half the time or maybe it’s their way of meeting tourist because most are lost asking for directions!
The funniest episode was at the airport in Lisbon when we were directed to go down a winding corridor, only to have no idea where to go once the signs stopped leading the way. Nothing like watching a group of sleep deprived travellers trying to figure out which way to go and who was going to risk going through the glass exit doors in case they couldn’t return. Needless to say we figured things out and cruised through immigration with no wait at all.
That’s definitely not what happened with my luggage however - I was one of a handful of people still waiting for luggage almost an hour after our plane landed. A mini stressful moment, but it eventually arrived and thankfully I was quickly off to figure out how to purchase a ticket for the Metro and then catch my train to Porto.
I can’t say the train ride was overly eventful, as I was asleep most of the way…head bopping and everything...yes I was that annoying sleeper next to you. Before taking my final train downtown, I grabbed a quick cup of cappuccino and got a well needed jolt of caffeine. It worked so well, when I arrived at my accommodations, I decided to head out for a few hours to explore. Unfortunately that jolt of energy is pretty much gone as I write this, so my adventures from today will need to wait until I can actually focus on the screen!
Until tomorrow...freshly rested!
Share in the experience....
